A Shiny New Idea

I have a shiny new idea – thanks to Karen Willsey Bass for the term – and it’s so appealing.

Sometimes a story idea comes with such energy and inspiration it’s irresistible. It conquers all writer’s block, and supersedes all other projects and to do lists.

The best writing comes from working in that inspiration. Perhaps this is the addiction of writing – those moments when the world drops away and the shiny idea takes over.

I’ll indulge myself with my new toy this morning and get back to my other not quite so wonderfully shiny story this afternoon.

From Idea to Story

Anna, you asked: How do you formulate an idea into a story?

I start with a snippet of an idea, and let it grow very very slowly. I’ll get bits of ideas and scribble them down on whatever paper is nearby (paper napkin, receipt, music program), toss the bits into a notebook, and keep adding to the pile, sometimes for years. I’ll play with ideas, rearrange them, add to them -  until the story has taken form in my head. Only then do I actually start “writing” the manuscript.
