It’s A Crime Not To Read

I’ve just finished my fourth school in my It’s A Crime Not To Read visits. I had a wonderful time, in schools all around Calgary.

I read to the kids, always making sure I stopped at exciting spots. I talked about the process of writing and the endlessness of editing, and answered all kinds of wonderful questions.

In each group, we made up a story, including falling down a hole in the school into an alligator-infested lake, and dragons taking over a school. (It was the tails poking out of their pants that gave them away).

I love the wacky imaginations of kids! Now, back to writing.

There Should Be A Law

It’s snowing. It’s the end of May, and it’s snowing. Again.

I’m used to snow for the Victoria Day long weekend – there’s just tradition in Calgary. That’s why we have our annual It’s Victoria Day Dammit Barbeque. Always, in spite of the snow. But the 24th should be the last possible day.

Snow on the long weekend lets us pretend we’re rugged Canadians. Snow after that? We just whimper why? why?

Canmore

I spent Saturday afternoon at Cafe Books in Canmore, Alberta, signing Crow Boy and chatting. There’s a wicked view from the front of the store – I watched storms come and go across the face of a mountain all afternoon.

I met Jocey Asnong, who works at Cafe Books, is a local artist, and was signing her wonderful self-published book, Nuptse and Lhotse in Nepal. This is a ridiculous story of two adventurous cats who climb Mount Everest, a perfect story to be coming out of Canmore. I was delighted to buy a copy to send to a small friend.

Cursed Editing

I just finished the page proofs for Cursed! It was fun to read it again, after being away from it for a while. I’d have moments thinking, “I wrote this?”

I also discovered all sorts of potential for puns with the title.
